About Siberian Huskies

Updated on December 31, 2010

Siberian Huskies

Huskies are are majestic pets to have. Not only are they on the go to see you in their life but they are on the go in general! They are very active dogs and very beautiful dogs. Don't be fooled by their beauty though, they can be very hard work. They are as strong as a bull and a bit destructive. Before getting a pet husky you might want to consider reading these tips.

Feeding Your Siberian Husky

Huskies will eat anything, but that does not mean that all they want to eat is good for them. DO NOT feed them any sweets, caffeine, chocolate, sugar-free gum, grapes/dried grapes, chemicals, onions, and chicken bones. Usually the breeder you buy your Husky from will give you all the information on what your pet needs to eat. However, if they do not happen to tell you ask your pet store and they are sure to make a good decision. Huskies are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. Any food your vet recommends has what your husky needs for its diet/nutrition. Toys are not a substitute for food!

Tug Of War!

Don't be surprised to see your Siberian Husky run to you with a toy in its mouth ready to win! Huskies LOVE to play tug of war. They have an amazing amount of strength to challenge you with. So let the battle begin!

Vet Visits

Taking your husky to the vet is recommended. The vet will give you any medication your dog may need, such as for heartworm and flea prevention. If you have any questions about your pet be sure to tell the vet! The ride to the vet is never a problem for huskies. Most are very calm and bored. If preferred bring a toy along so they won't get bored that easily. Bring your husky to the vet wearing a leash. You don't need to bring them in a carrier unless your vet advises it. Remember to take your your husky for checkups monthly. If you have any emergencies take your pet to the vet immediately.

Do Huskies Like the Beach?

Sakari (a puppy my family has) loves the beach! Most huskies love water in general. At the beach she doesn't go into the water, but she does like to dig in the sand and sit in a small amount of water. Some huskies love to just jump right into the water and pounce at the waves. Try to take your husky to the beach for some fun sometime.

Destructive Pets?

Siberian Huskies ARE destructive. They can eat anything in your home in a blink of an eye. Luckily when they see toys laying around the house they will take out all their need to damage something into those toys! So it is a very good idea to have lots of toys in the house. Every now and then they will want to play with you. They like toys you don't have to spend money on too, such as pine cones, sticks, and leaves. They get to be happy and your home doesn't get destroyed.

Lots Of Water

Your husky is going to want a whole lot of water during the day especially if it is outside a lot. Many people think huskies hate the heat and can't be in it. Those people are wrong! Huskies love the heat as long as they get enough water. They will pant and get uncomfortable if out for too long. Panting is fine because it is a great way to cool down. Setting down a big bowl of cold water for your husky is a great idea. If you can't supply a lot of cold water warm water works too.

Training

Siberian Huskies are very intelligent dogs, which makes training very easy. Training can be difficult if you don't use treats. Using treats is a very successful way to train them. As a puppy my husky has learned to shake, sit, come, partially stay, sit pretty, down, and sometimes craw. If your husky is older then training can be difficult. Taking older huskies to training classes can be easier, if your husky is having a hard time learning tricks. Most huskies don't have a hard time at all!

Trimming Siberian Husky Claws

If you don't like sharp claws, then buy a claw trimmer. They are not expensive! Their claws do grow to be very long and sharp if not trimmed. It is easier and better if you trim their claws when they are sleepy. When you look at their claws, you can see the muscle in their claws that you DO NOT cut. Cutting this muscle would be very painful for your pet. Be very careful and observant when trimming their claws.

Crates

When you go to sleep at night, you wont want your house destroyed as you sleep. Putting your husky in a crate is recommended. The first week they will whine and sometimes howl, but once they get used to their crate they will go to sleep. They will like their crate even more if they get a treat for going in the crate. The crate is uncomfortable without a mat. If your husky is not comfortable it is sure to whine. Put a comfortable mat and toys and their crate to keep them pleased. After a week or two your pet will go in the crate on its own when its their nap time.

Can't sleep due to whining from an uncomfortable crate?

With this comfortable cushion for your crate you Siberian Husky will sleep in its crate very comfortably! No more whining at night.

Nap Time

Your pet will choose what times during the day it will nap. It will also pick its own spots as well. If your husky likes its crate it will sleep in there occasionally. On other occasion it will sleep somewhere quiet and secure. Huskies are most related to wolves so they will make sure their in a safe area to sleep. They won't like to be bothered when they nap. If you have to wake them up, Wake them up by pulling the collar gently. When awake, they will come to you.
