Tropical Christmas

Updated on September 12, 2012

Celebrate Christmas with a Tropical Flair

Ok, technically I live in the subtropics, not the tropics, but I have a neighbor who has Christmas lights wrapped around his palm trees, so I think that's close enough. If you live somewhere where there's no chance of having a white Christmas, you might be facing some... shall we say... decorating challenges for the holiday season. Plus, sometimes it's a little hard to get into the spirit of things when it's sunny and warm. This lens is here to help you go with the flow. Have a Merry Tropical Christmas!

Palm Trees and Beaches

The tropics are the Earth's equatorial regions, but for our purposes, let's just extend that to anywhere that isn't getting cold for Christmas, which includes most of the Southern Hemisphere (it's summer, after all) and the subtropics of the Northern Hemisphere. Why fight all the great weather? Make the most of what you have and decorate your palm tree. Use pineapple-themed cut crystal for your holiday meal. Use sand dollars and starfish as ornaments! If you live where it's cold and you are pining for the sunny tropics, then bring a taste of the tropics to your home.

Palm Christmas Tree

You can decorate a normal Christmas tree with seashells and starfish or you can go really tropical and use a palm tree as your Christmas tree!

Tropical Christmas Music

You need some tropical Christmas music to set the tone for your holiday celebration. Personally, I'd just go with Jimmy Buffett, but here are some other options for you.

The Tropical Christmas Song

If you don't want to load up a CD or mp3, you can always learn some tropical songs to sing.

Tropical Christmas Ornaments

To be honest, you can't hang much by way of ornaments on a palm tree. You either need to decorate a more traditional tree with tropical ornaments or else you can wrap lights around a palm tree and suspend decorations from the light wiring. Another option is to decorate your home rather than making a big fuss over a tree.
